What is
Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is an ancient Korean art of self-defense that combines physical ability with mental and emotional discipline. The literal translation of the term from Korean to English defines the art clearly: Tae means foot (kicking), Kwon means hand (punching) and Do is the Korean word for art or way.

The TaeKwonDo philosophy emphasizes balance between body, mind and spirit – which is something the student is always trying to achieve. As Martial Artists, emphasis is placed on the skills and techniques of self-defense, physical fitness and peace of mind, as students strive to develop their personal skills in order to grow in a well-rounded fashion and enhance their ability to cope with life’s challenges.  With training, students benefit both physically (increased strength, coordination & flexibility, and improved cardiovascular conditioning), as well as mentally (gaining increased self-confidence, concentration, patience, self-control and a positive attitude).

Tae Kwon Do Classes are offered for 4½ to12 year olds, Teens and adults.
Little Dragons - For children between 4½ and 6 years of age, we offer a special half-hour class – called the Little Dragons.  These classes emphasize balance, coordination and development of focus.  Students learn a variety of self-defense techniques, the 5 Tenets of TaeKwonDo, and a basic exercise regimen that gets them ready to join the Beginner Class.
Beginners – Students start out in the Beginner Class where they learn the foundations of TaeKwonDo…kicking, blocking, punching and stances.  Students in the Beginner Class have White, Senior White and Yellow Belts.
Intermediate – At the Senior Yellow Belt level, students move into the Intermediate class where they begin to learn sparring – of course, with appropriate safety gear!  Senior Yellow to Senior Green Belts are in the Intermediate Class.
Advanced – Students in this class learn more advanced kicking and self-defense techniques.  TaeKwonDo’s attack is aggressive but the primary focus is on the defensive aspects.  Blue, Brown, Red and Black Belts are in this class.

Master Steven brings over 30 years of Martial Arts knowledge and experience to the way he teaches.  His version of TaeKwonDo emphasizes development of a strong body and a focused mind.  All of the classes are involved in some sort of speed and agility training – with older and more experienced students training at a more advanced level.

Special Classes

Black Belt Club - A black belt is considered the “mastery of the basics” and at this point students begin to learn advanced material.  For those Intermediate and Advanced students that have shown a particularly strong commitment we offer an opportunity to learn more advanced techniques prior to achievement of the Black Belt.  This half-hour class offers specialized training in areas such as Board Breaking, Weapons and Tournament Training.
Teen/Class – For our older students, we offer a class that is more physically rigorous than those for children.  In addition to learning Weapons, Board Breaking and the other basics of TaeKwonDo, students in this class do extensive circuit training and work with the heavy bags.
